The qualifications aim to guide and assess the development of knowledge
and skills relating to the health and social care workforce. These
qualifications confirm competence in areas of health and social care where
appropriate.
The Edexcel Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) for England
(QCF) serves as the required qualification for registration and regulatory
requirements in the social care sector in England. Learners must take nine
mandatory units. They then have a choice of optional knowledge and
competence units covering different areas of health and social care such as
supporting person-centred approaches, advocacy, healthcare, supporting
those with disabilities, learning disabilities or dementia. Learners have the
opportunity to take a general qualification in health and social care, or they
may follow specialist pathways in Dementia Care or Learning Disabilities.
Who are these qualifications for?
These qualifications are for all learners aged 16 and above who are capable
of reaching the required standards.
This qualification confirms competence in these areas for roles such as:
• care assistants/support workers/key workers in residential settings
• healthcare assistants/support workers in community and primary care
environments
• healthcare assistants/support workers in acute health environments
• care assistants/support workers/key workers in domiciliary services
• care assistants/support workers/key workers in day services
• support workers in supported living projects
• community-based care assistants/support workers/key workers,
including those working in specialist areas, eg dementia, learning
disabilities
• personal assistants employed directly by the individual they support or
their families
• emerging new types of workers and multidisciplinary health roles
crossing traditional service barriers and delivery models.
What progression opportunities are available to learners who achieve
these qualifications?
It is anticipated that learners will progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Health
and Social Care (Adults) for England (QCF) or to specialist qualifications reflecting the context in which they work.
This qualification is within the Diploma range of credit.
Learners must achieve a minimum of 46 credits to gain the Level 2 Diploma
in Health and Social Care (Adults) for England. To do this they must
achieve:
– 24 credits from the mandatory units
– a minimum of two credits and a maximum of seven credits from the
optional context/specialist knowledge units
– at least 15 credits from the optional competence units
Learners claiming a specialist pathway (Dementia, or Adults with Learning
Disabilities) must achieve some specified units within the credits required in
the optional context/specialist and optional knowledge units.
